The Mint Family
Identifying Characteristics:
Irregular, bilaterally symmetrical flowers. Stems square in
cross-section. Opposite leaves. Flower arrangement typically
whirled clusters toward the top of each stem. Most are very
aromatic and can be smelled easily nearby, by rubbing your finger on a
leaf and then smelling it, or by smelling the plant directly.
Well-known Family Members:
Lavender, Lambs Ear, Catnip, Sage, Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano, Mint,
Spearmint, Peppermint
Important Biochemical Characteristics:
Most contain aromatic oils in their leaves and stems.
