Sara's Poetry Pages - Sara McDarby

  Ties

The ties that bind
don't
anymore.

The ends are frayed,
the knots loosened
what I am doing wrong?
              what is wrong with me?

I try to hang on
    at the same time I'm
             letting go
I'm too tired
          to work harder
afraid
        to give up
                what is wrong with me?

Aren't we just recreating
        the family that was
by
       discarding the old
and
    building
          the family that is?
                But I miss what was.

Don't my new connections
        count?
             Can't they replace
those I can't
        restore?

            I never meant
to give them up.
            yet, somehow
they crawl farther
         and faster away
until someday
they will be out of sight.
